Custer, the massacre of the 7th Cavalry.

On June 25 and 26, 1876, near the Little Bighorn River in Montana Territory, the 7th Cavalry, with a force of approximately 700 men led by Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer, suffered a complete defeat against a numerically superior enemy, despite being equipped with modern rifles. Five of the twelve companies that comprised the 7th Cavalry were annihilated. The engagement resulted in a crushing victory for the Indian coalition, which was led by several prominent chiefs, including Crazy Horse and Chief Gall.
